A Robust Estimation of Location and Scatter

چکیده
Statisticians face increasingly the task of analyzing large and high dimension multivariate data sets. This is due to the advances in computer technology which have facilitated greatly the collection of large data sets and, on the other hand, to the fact that most statistical experiments are multivariate in nature. One of the primary problems encountered in this task is robust estimation of location and scatter. In the literature the most popular and widely used robust parametric method for such parameter estimation is the so-called Fast MCD. However, although it is affineequivariant and has high breakdown point, it is not apt when the data sets are of high dimension because its computational efficiency becomes lower. This is a direct consequence from the use of Mahalanobis distance or, equivalently, Mahalanobis depth in data ordering process which needs the inversion of covariance matrix and the use of MCD as the objective function. In this paper we propose a method which is as effective as Fast MCD but computationally more efficient. For this purpose, in multivariate ordering step, we use a new depth function which is equivalent to Mahalanobis depth and has lower computational complexity. Furthermore, in data concentration step, we use vector variance as the measure of multivariate scatter instead of covariance determinant and we replace the objective function MCD with minimum vector variance to reduce the complexity of this step. At the end of the paper we illustrate the effectiveness of this method using a simulation experiment.

Introduction: Scattered photon is one of the main defects that degrade the quality and quantitative accuracy of nuclear medicine images. Accurate estimation of scatter in projection data of SPECT is computationally extremely demanding for activity distribution in uniform and non-uniform dense media. Methods: The objective of this paper is to develop and validate a scatter correction technique ...
متن کاملFast and robust bootstrap
In this paper we review recent developments on a bootstrap method for robust estimators which is computationally faster and more resistant to outliers than the classical bootstrap. This fast and robust bootstrap method is, under reasonable regularity conditions, asymptotically consistent. We describe the method in general and then consider its application to perform inference based on robust es...

The paper discusses the location-allocation model for logistic networks and distribution centers through considering uncertain parameters. In real-world cases, demands and transshipment costs change over the period of the time. This may lead to large cost deviation in total cost. Scenario based robust optimization approaches are proposed where occurrence probability of each scenario is not know...

متن کاملA Robust Distributed Estimation Algorithm under Alpha-Stable Noise Condition
Robust adaptive estimation of unknown parameter has been an important issue in recent years for reliable operation in the distributed networks. The conventional adaptive estimation algorithms that rely on mean square error (MSE) criterion exhibit good performance in the presence of Gaussian noise, but their performance drastically decreases under impulsive noise. In this paper, we propose a rob...
